Starting 26 September 2026
Ages 6–12Saturdays From 4 - 4:45 pm
Join our new Irish Traditional Music Session for children aged 6–12, starting on Saturday 26 September 2026 at 4:00 pm.
This lively and supportive group session gives children the opportunity to explore Irish traditional music through the experience of playing together in a traditional Irish music session. Children will learn tunes, listen and respond to one another, and develop the skills needed to make music confidently as part of a group. Suitable instruments include fiddle, tin whistle, keyboard and other compatible instruments.
Children will develop:
- Repertoire skills by learning and performing a range of traditional Irish tunes
- Aural skills by listening carefully, recognising patterns and learning music by ear
- Rhythmic understanding through keeping a steady pulse and becoming familiar with common Irish dance rhythms
- Ensemble and session skills by learning to start, stop, keep together, listen and respond to other musicians
- Musical memory through repeated listening, imitation and performance
- Technique and coordination on their chosen instrument
- Musical expression and style by exploring phrasing, articulation and the character of Irish traditional music
- Confidence and independence through regular group performance and shared music-making
- Social and collaborative skills by learning, rehearsing and playing together as part of a traditional music group
The session will work towards a special St Patrick’s Day performance at the Enact Music Centre on the weekend prior to 17 March 2027, in celebration of St Patrick's Day, giving children a clear musical goal and the opportunity to share what they have learned with family and friends.
Instrument requirements:
Children should bring their own instrument, with the exception of keyboard, which will be provided.
There will be 22 weekly sessions, starting on Saturday 26 September 2026 and concluding with a concert on 12 March 2027.
